Hawksland are appointed as Advisors to the Board of RAI
Indonesia’s PT. Regio Aviasi Industry (RAI) have appointed Hawksland Associates to their Board of Advisors. RAI’s President – Director – Agung Nugroho signed the agreement with Hawksland’s Managing Director – Gary Windas in early September 2017 whereby Hawksland will assist RAI with critical advice, guidance and support in the further development of the RAI company and the development of the R80, a new generation high speed regional turboprop aircraft.
Hawksland will also support RAI with providing access to Hawksland’s extensive network of Senior Associates many of which are considered leading authorities within the aerospace industry. Specifically, Hawksland will provide assistance and advice spanning all areas of the RAI company and the R80 program including: strategy development, business planning, raising investment, valuation, offset, program, engineering, operations, industrialisation, technology, certification, commercial and procurement and supply chain management, aftermarket MRO and spares, aircraft sales, lease financing.
RAI’s Chairman – Prof. Dr-ing. B.J. Habibie (former President of Indonesia) recently met with both Gary Windas and Nigel Garner – Senior Associate in Jakarta and was delighted to welcome Hawksland to support the RAI leadership team. Prof. Habibie stated, “Homeland Indonesia is blessed with the largest archipelago in the world, a very wide air space, which must be entwined for the greater progress and prosperity of the people of Indonesia. Air transport is a vehicle for empowerment that can strengthen the relationship between the regions, improve the national economy and increase endurance as a nation. The need for air-transportation must be filled by Indonesia itself, in improving competitiveness for self-reliance in production and directing the domestic and regional markets. Through the R80 program, we’re designing and manufacturing regional aircraft to fill the needs of the market, provide jobs for the youth of the nation, to build a strong network with our stakeholders and revive our national aerospace industry.”
With the lowest operating cost in its class, the R80 offers high dispatch reliability, advanced avionics for increased safety, high passenger comfort and is friendly to the environment by nature of its low fuel consumption.
Hawksland advises on Asian clients’ new turboprop aircraft business plan.
Hawksland Associates have been assigned by its Asian client to provide advice on its new regional aircraft programme business plan. Our client is embarking on an ambitious programme to establish an all new turboprop aircraft. The aircraft is anticipated to take 4 years to develop with a further one and a half years of flight testing and certification. Hawksland were invited exclusively to review our clients business plan and provide expert advice on the entire programme including: market, concept, layout, engineering development, supply chain management and procurement strategies, systems and processes, operations including industrialisation, sub-assembly and final assembly philosophy, plant layout, certification, logistics, aftermarket MRO and spares support. In addition, Hawksland have advised on the fiscal impact of the Asian clients domestic economy as a result of creating a new aerospace cluster. Hawksland have been requested to provide continuous support to our client over the coming years ahead.

Hawksland completes first phase of Middle East defence MRO clients capability transfer programme.
Hawksland’s Programme Management team have just completed the first phase in programme planning for the transfer of defence MRO capabilities from multiple air bases and maintenance centres to a brand new purpose built MRO facility at its client facility in the Middle East.
The new MRO facility needs to be able to maintain over 500 military aircraft across 40+ different platforms. Hawksland put together a highly experienced team of Defence MRO, facilities and operational management experts and developed a comprehensive project management proposal convincing its client that Hawksland were the team of choice to be awarded the assignment. After security and ITAR clearance the team embarked on a comprehensive programme of evaluating the current state of existing operations, capabilities and capacities across multiple locations. Auditing each piece of major MRO and back-shop equipment and logging the entire inventory of tools and capabilities requiring transfer the Hawksland team put together an integrated master project plan for the capability transfer. This included development of a logistics transfer plan, new facilities capability plan as well as interfacing with each project stakeholder responsible for each of the new facilities main functions. Hawksland were also requested during this phase to submit a Forward & Depth white paper identifying the MRO needs of the country’s Air Force in various different fleet deployment missions.
In the next phase of work Hawksland are required to assess each air base in further depth, identify the forward load requirement of the organisation during its black-out transfer period and ensure buffer stocks and advanced maintenance requirements are scheduled. In addition, Hawksland will look into ‘leaning-out’ existing MRO value-streams and manage the complete transfer of all capabilities until commissioned and certified at the new facility.
Hawksland generate 20% man hour savings for Aircraft MRO facility
Hawksland’s client, a leading group of aerospace companies, commissioned Hawksland to conduct a health check on its underperforming AMRO and CMRO operations at its Aircraft Services Division.
The assignment entailed performing a detailed audit and health check of our clients’ underperforming USA & Asia aircraft MRO & CMRO facilities. Our report, led to Hawksland being requested to implement a phased improvement programme. Our approach focused on cultural & organisation changes in which we engaged one of our leading MRO experts on an Interim Magement basis to embed lean principles. Value stream mapping identified information & materials flow waste reduction which was subsequently streamlined. Additional activities we led were the revamping of the hangar; introduced 5S; visual;workplace; policy deployment; Kaizen events; leadership and team development.
As a consequence of the work undertaken we helped our client achieve 20% man-hour savings on the Asian aircraft MRO activities freeing capacity and better asset utilisation. The work performed at the clients USA CMRO activities led to $2.3m savings.
Hawksland develops Aerospace & Space business development strategy for aerostructures client
Hawksland Associates Europoean based client – a company specialising in highly advanced aerospace and space composite aerostructures products, engaged Hawksland to help them develop their market strategy for their target markets.
Over a 2 month period, Hawksland conducted a series of comprehensive strategic business development and operational review workshops with the clients’ Senior Management Team. A bottom-up assessment of the client organisation was performed, assessing its current capabilities, capacitites, key technologies, qualifications, approvals and existing client portfolio. Further analysis of its current cost base and supply chains was also performed to provide the basis of developing the framework for the strategic business development workshops. Using latest market data and market intelligence resources, Hawksland’s extensive associate and client contact network, Hawksland were able to put together a comprehensive structured approach to creating a business development strategy for its client. Significantly, as a result of the workshop, the client was able to identify new niche, high margin markets and customers for its offerings.
Additional workshops were subsequently held with the client in assisting them:- develop the execution plan for each element of their new strategy; holding leadership development and coaching sessions with Senior Managers and creating estimating models for its Commercial Department. The client were also embarking on developing automated composite layup technologies in partnership with other OEM’s. Hawksland were invited to provide independent assessment on their Industry 4.0 concept.
Hawksland appoint Captain Mark Thistlethwaite as Head of Business Development – Middle East & North Africa Region
Hawksland have appointed Mark Thistlethwaite as Head of Business Development – Middle East & North Africa (MENA) Region.
Mark has had a highly successful career in the aviation and defence sectors and brings considerable experience of Asia and Middle East markets. Following an accomplished career in the Royal Navy, retiring as a Captain, he has won significant new business in Bangladesh, increased sales in south Asia and established a joint venture company in Abu Dhabi. Mark has held the following previous appointments: Chief Executive of AgustaWestland Aviation Services LLC; Head of Region Indian sub-Continent, Government Sales; International Business Development Director of L3 Communications Ocean Systems; Headquarters Support Director (Captain) of Royal Navy Operational Fleet HQ; Training Director – Britannia Royal Naval College – Training Commander. Mark has a Naval Engineering Degree, is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and a Chartered Member of Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

Hawksland completes MRO business due diligence
Hawksland Associates have recently completed a commercial and operational due diligence review of a European based aircraft MRO business for its private equity client. Our team of experts with specific aircraft platform experience were formed and mobilised within 1 week from our clients enquiry to conduct full commercial and operational review. Hawksland successfully completed the assignment delivering a comprehensive report spanning: the industry and general state of the market overview; aircraft platform market dynamics and competitor analysis with views and opportunities for retaining and securing new business provided; operational capability, capacity and certification status analysis with improvement recommendations including cost structure along with a management team strengths finder. Risks identified and potential mitigation proposals were also made along with a new MRO aircraft platform market review. Our opinion on the viability of the business as a suitable investment provided.
Hawksland Programme Manages low weight solution for the A380 aircraft
Hawksland Associates has completed an assignment with the leading Aircraft OEM – Airbus, being responsible for the Programme Management and introduction of a new material technology for aerostructure leading edge applications.
Hawksland Associates, led by Gary Windas has successfully managed the introduction of a new material technology for leading edge applications with its client – a major Aircraft OEM. Experiencing high weight problems with its existing VTP and HTP aerostructure leading edge design configuration, the client was looking for a lower weight alternative.
Hawksland’s existing client, a leading 1st-tier aerostructures company specialised in a new fibre metal laminate material technology called ‘Glare’ which for certain applications is a lower weight alternative to monolithic alloys and composites while also providing high fatigue and damage tolerance properties. With this technology, Hawksland’s 1st-tier client was able to offer a solution to the Aircraft OEM’s weight issues.
With its existing experience in the development of ‘Glare’, Hawksland were ideally placed to support both its existing client ‘propose’ the ‘Glare’ solution and also manage the introduction of the new material for the new application. Appointed by the Aircraft OEM, Hawksland Associates worked closely with the OEM and 1st-tier clients teams and Programme Managed the introduction of ‘Glare’ for the leading edge VTP and HTP applications on the OEM clients new aircraft programme. Responsibities included: design engineering; first-article development; retrofit emodiment in the existing programme, supply chain management and establishment of the bird-strike test certification requirements.
Hawksland helps in the development of a new military aircraft final assembly line
Hawksland Associates has completed an assignment for a major aircraft OEM supporting the development of a Final Assembly Line for its military transport aircraft.
Hawksland Associates has successfully delivered a turnkey solution by Project Managing and Project Engineering the development of the Final Assembly Line for its clients military transport aircraft. Specific responsibilites Hawksland Associates undertook were for the Final Assembly Line of the Cargo / Ramp Doors and the Fuselage sections.
Hawksland supports the conversion of PAX aircraft into Freighters
Hawksland Associates has supported its client – a major aircraft conversion and maintenance, repair and overhaul services provider with the conversion of several wide-body passenger aircraft into freighters.
Hawksland Associates has been assigned to support its client Project Manage and Project Engineer the conversion of an aging fleet of widebody passenger aircraft into freighters. Responsibities include the management of the complete supply chain for supplying all bought-in components, manufacturing engineering, integration and installation management of the newly acquired parts and swap-out of old / end-of-life LRU and structural components.
In addition, Hawksland Associates has worked closely with its clients other appointed consultants and supported the development and introduction of KANBAN and Just-in-time manufacturing systems.

Hawksland’s client, a leading Aerospace and Defence Design Engineering Services company which also is the holder of an EASA 21J Design Airworthiness Certificate, supports the development of new aircraft with its global OEM and 1st-tier aerostructures customer base as well as supporting the Airworthiness status of a fleet of over 200 Regional Jet and Turboprop aircraft still in service.
